Art glass table lamp
James Blomfield, with glass panels painted by
Martin Malfret, Vancouver c. 1908

image

James Blomfield, who is known for his wonderful works in stained glass, was also the designer of Vancouver's Coat of Arms. James Blomfield’s stain glass windows may be seen throughout British Columbia. The Three Graces designed for the home of sugar magnate B.T. Rogers is an additional example of Blomfield’s artistry. This Arts and Crafts inspired art glass lamp style was popular among many in British Columbia, particularly those living in Arts and Crafts style bungalow homes. The Arts and Crafts Movement, originating in England and associated with the designs of William Morris, influenced the establishment of arts and crafts guilds in Canada, United States and elsewhere. The use of wood and copper and stylized details inspired by medieval design motifs distinguish this lamp design from those influenced by the design of Louis Tiffany.
