The Newtsuit was produced by Hard Suits Inc., a company formed by North Vancouver diving technology pioneer Phil Nuytten to market his 1984-patented invention of a rotary joint. This joint makes limb articulation possible even under the very high pressures found thousands of feet down, while the inside of the suit remains at normal atmospheric pressure, eliminating the need for decompression to avoid the 'bends'.
